I am planning on buying a beagle. I have heard different things from different people about whether a beagle should be crated while the owners are at work. Some say that they should not be left to roam a house unsupervised. I'm not sure crating is the answer. Anyone have advice?

Re: Thinking about buying a beagle
Fri, September 23, 2005 - 2:27 PMI have a cage for my Beagle. She acts like it is the end of the world when you put her in it and she even sings the blues while my mum's Jack Russell accompanies her. :o) However, she goes into her cage on her own when she wants to lay down. Beagles are very dramatic! She likes her cage, but doesn't like to do anything that she didn't think of first. :o)
Beagles will eat whatever they can get their little paws on. Leaving them to roam free is just enticing them.
Ultimately, it is your choice, but not a bad one if you do decide to do it. We keep both of the dogs in the cage when we are out.

Beagles are little drama queens. My baby howls her little heart out when I put her in the crate. She makes the same noises as when she is hurt. It really is heart breaking. However, she cannot be trusted around the house. My only options were sacrficing all of my furnture and worldly possessions to her mad rampages, or sticking her in the crate.
Bottom line -- beagles want to be with you all the time, and won't be happy otherwise, no matter where you put them.

Mon, September 26, 2005 - 1:10 PMI have the same stories to share about bellowing and heart wrenchingly sad little faces when it comes to crating, but I wanted to offer something offer to your post:
Instead of buying a beagle, perhaps if at all possible, you might consider adopting from your local Beagle Rescue. Unfortunately, lots of folks get beagles to hunt and, if one is gun shy or whatever, they leave the animals in the woods to fend for themselves.... All of these beautiful, affectionate, sweet dogs would love a warm hug and the comfort of a loving home... Just a thought.

Re: Thinking about buying a beagle
Tue, September 27, 2005 - 12:16 PMThank you for the suggestion, I am on a list with the local beagle rescue. There have been several puppies that have come up but all of them had special needs that I could not meet and thought it would be unfair to take them in when I could not provide the special care they needed (abused, neglected, needs someone who does not work to care for them) I still hope that a match can be made before I turn to a breeder.
